What Happens to Your Rubbish?

The junk and rubbish we accumulate over time it the same in every household. We keep stuff because we think we may need it one day or our kids may find it useful. Invariably it sits in the attic or the garage and accumulates dust. The furniture and electrical appliances, old clothes sports equipment. There it is staring at us when we open the garage door. Eventually the decision is made that it is time to get rid of it. But what happens to all that stuff then?

The number one priority is to recycle and reuse as many of the items as possible. Unfortunately, not everything is reuseable therefore invariably items will go to landfill.

The transfer station will be the next stop. This provides the opportunity to sort the items that have an alternative use through recycling.

The key is the try and recycle as much as possible. This will include plastics, metal construction and building materials, batteries as well as other items. Some of the rubbish can convert to energy and fuel.

Some items are still usable. For example you can donate these to charity. Other items become parts. They can go to salvage yards where they go through a dismantling process and the parts resold.

So what are the typical items that can go though this process?

TV’s and Computer Monitors

These are some of the most common items. With new models coming out all the time they become obsolete very quickly. They also contain a number of toxic elements and therefore need dismantling carefully.

Some of the really old TVs have lead in them. While more modern flat screen monitors contain mercury as well as other toxic elements. The various elements and metals can go for resale.

Fridges & Freezers

Eventually fridges and freezers need replacing. In some cases they go through a process of refurbishment and before resale. If they are too old then the units individual elements of the fridge will be prepared for resale.

Mattresses

Generally mattresses will not appropriate for reuse. Who wants to sleep on a second hand mattress! However, this does not mean to say the components can’t be have an alternative use. The springs are generally steel, a valuable and useful commodity. The quilting and foam can make underlay for carpets. The wood frame has many alternative uses and any fabric can convert into felt and insulation.

Although you have no further use for your junk and rubbish, as you can see there is still economic life in many of these items you are look to get rid of. The items may not be used for the same use, but many of the component’s will be become a part of something else. This is great for the environment and enables far less to be put into landfill sites. When you are getting rid of your rubbish, give some thought to what will happen to that item. If the landfill can be avoided – that’s great for everyone!
