Metal Recycling: What Happens to a Car When it’s Life Comes to an End?

Have you ever wondered what has happened to all those older car model cars that you don’t see anymore? Where did they go to their grave, and did they end up polluting our environment? If you have ever wondered about this, well you will be pleased to know that there are strict procedures surrounding how this form of waste is dealt with.

With the sudden rise in the popularity of electric cars, more attention is being given to vehicles that have reduced carbon emissions. And even with newer model petrol cars striving to be more energy efficient, the public is increasingly looking to buy newer models.

Reduced emissions could be good news for the environment, but in terms of dealing with old cars, are we creating more of a problem?

Happily, the answer is no. Thanks to the stringent laws in place when dealing with an old car, up to 95% recovery and 85 % recycling of end-of-life vehicles is being achieved here, in the UK.

As Junk Removal Wirral is involved in waste management, we are here to advise our residents what to do when their car comes to the end of its life.

What Happens to An End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV)?

The first thing to do when a vehicle reaches the end of its life is to register it. There are two categories, and depending on the state of the vehicle you decide which one to nominate:

A premature ELV is one that has been written off because something has happened to it, perhaps an accident, or is damaged beyond repair. The second one is a natural ELV, and it no longer functions. It has simply come to the end of its purpose.

Either way, once registered, they are considered hazardous waste. Now they need to go through a de-pollution and recycling process. As dealing with hazardous waste is a specialized process, the vehicle must go to an authorized treatment facility.

What is Hazardous Waste in a Vehicle?

With over a million cars ending their lives every year in the UK, the job of dealing with the waste management of cars is enormous. Hazardous waste has environmental implications, meaning that indiscriminate disposal cause a lot of harm

The toxic substances in the vehicle must be removed, and the oils, batteries, and tyres need to be treated accordingly. Simply leaving them in would pose a danger to the environment. This first step is called de-pollution, and once the hazardous waste has been removed the vehicle will be ready for the next step, which is recycling.

Metal recycling

When a raw material can be recycled, it takes a lot of pressure off the environment. Mining metals requires a lot of energy, and subsequently, increases the amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

As a vehicle consists almost entirely of metal, the recycling of these raw materials will mean that most of the end-of-life vehicles can be used again, and in the process, new raw materials needn’t be used. This is an excellent outcome for an ELV. Metals can be recycled over and over again, and this can be done without altering their inherent properties.

A vehicle consists of two types of metals: ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The metals must be separated for recycling purposes as they have different properties. Once the vehicle has been through this process the separated metals are sent for recycling. The next step is to shred the metals, by putting them through a shredder. This serves to make the metals easier to work with and makes the next steps less energy-consuming.

Once shredded, the metal is sent to a furnace to be melted. The temperature at which the metal is melted will depend on the metal itself and could be as short as a few minutes or considerably longer. This is an energy-consuming process, but much less than making virgin materials.

Once purified the metal is solidified and cooled into a workable bar for future use, making something new for future use.

It Pays to Recycle

There is no doubt that recycling is a win-win all around. Imagine if those one million cars that end their lives annually were to be sent to landfills, there simply would be no space left. The recycling of cars and other metal products is a business that produces a great result for saving the environment from pollution and the dangers of toxic materials entering the ecosystem.

Just like the recycling of other consumables, plastic, glass, and cardboard, metals have value in their scrap form. This is the beginning of a business for those wanting to do the right thing and take these used materials out of the environment.

Your car may be worth something, even if it doesn’t go, so ask a waste management company that operates in this sphere to advise you further.

Our team at Junk Removal Wirral, a local rubbish removal company and junk cleaner is at the center of the recycling revolution. Wherever we can we ensure that junk that is recyclable can be sent to the right place for processing.

Hopefully, in this way, we can make an impact on the threat of pollution in the face of climate change.
