Arbor Day: Highlighting the Importance of Greening with Trees

Arbor Day gives us all a reminder of how important it is to have green spaces with trees and the benefit of forests in environmental issues facing us. Having such greening initiatives serves to promote awareness and get communities involved in a whole batch of activities. Having a clean environment free of junk is one thing, but tree planting for the future is another, which is just as important for our future.

As waste management authorities battle to clean up illegal dumpsites spoiling green spaces, and junk removal companies assist with rubbish removal routines and promote recycling, climate change continues to threaten us all. And the reason for this is that, because of our bad waste habits, the atmosphere continues to see carbon buildup as a result.

Trees are our best solution to reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases. By using carbon dioxide in the air through photosynthesis, they sequester CO2, our main hope in reducing the high global temperatures we are experiencing.

The mitigation of climate change is therefore a two-pronged attack on greenhouse gases: reducing the waste levels and trying to increase efforts to “carbon sink” through preserving our forests and planting more trees.

Our role at Junk Removal Wirral as a local service provider managing waste issues is firmly focused on keeping our communities’ environment clean. We are also tree aware and work tirelessly to help keep our green spaces free of junk.

Arbor Day: What’s It All About?

This is the one day that celebrates trees, normally the first day in September. Sometimes extended to Arbor Week, it provides concerned organizations the opportunity to do tree planting and awareness campaigns.

The goal of Arbor Day is to highlight the role trees play in conservation and sustainable land usage, while at the same time offering the opportunity to plant new trees. By creating awareness of trees, hopefully, more communities will become environmentally conscious.

Highlighting the Importance of Trees in Our Environment

Trees go much further than their role in reducing CO2 in the atmosphere. The added benefits of tree cover are the focus of many of the awareness campaigns on the day.

These are some of them:

  • Trees provide shelter and habitats for animals, birds, and insects. They are a critical part of ecosystems and provide a stable environment for them all to thrive.
  • They are a source of food and timber and are valuable raw materials that can be sustainably farmed and contribute to food security.
  • They beautify landscapes, parks, and recreation areas, providing shade and shelter. Trees are good therapy and add value to many outdoor activities like walks, hikes, and relaxing. They are equally important in city areas as they are in country areas.
  • Trees are good for health, acting as an efficient filter system to rid the atmosphere of pollutants and absorption of toxic substances in the air.
  • Trees help regulate water activity by providing a stable ground cover for runoff water and preventing soil erosion. This is particularly relevant as we experienced increased incidents of flooding, where trees act as a barrier to further damage occurring.
  • The more trees we have, the more biodiversity opportunities there will be, as trees provide an ideal supporting system for wildlife.
  • The benefits to communities are enormous, those living in a well-wooded area are happier, while events like Arbor Day bring us all together.

Let’s see how communities can play their part in Arbor Day activities:

Arbor Day: How Communities Can Participate

There are various ways a community can contribute to Arbor Day.  Look out for event organizers and join them on the day.

  • Tree planting often takes place in public places where communities will benefit. These are normally organized by NGOs or your local council.
  • Establishment of community gardens for purposes of food security involving planting fruit trees is a worthwhile activity.
  • Adding beauty through greening and cleaning of spaces that have been devastated by fire, floods, or man’s activities.
  • Planting a tree in your community by adopting a tree and providing care for it through its growing stages is another worthwhile activity.

Arbor Day: Creating Awareness of the Tree Cause.

Look out for media campaigns that catch the eye ahead of Arbor Day. There are many ways to create excitement for the event:

  • Using a #hashtag campaign with a catchy name, persuade community members to buy into the event by posting their day's activities.
  • Look out on Facebook and similar platforms where information is shared regarding Arbor Day.
  • Schools are a great place to stimulate the awareness of trees for future generations, with tree planting events, and projects involving science and art.
  • Community center activities encourage the residents to give up some of their time to attend tree-related events.
  • Look out for fundraising events that link into tree pledges and ask for donations towards sponsoring a tree for planting.

These Arbor Day celebrations are likely to be fun, educational, and an inclusive way to meet others. This participation and awareness creation about the importance of trees and environmental conservation will help mitigate the negative effects of climate change in the future.
